Otobong Nkanga’s multidisciplinary artistic practice is defined by her ability to impregnate herself with the accumulation of human and natural traces left in objects and landscapes. With a scientific view, she observes objects and environments that trigger memory, thought or emotion. The artist is inspired by broad historical contexts as well as current realities taking on a very open gamut of knowledge production: from political theory to philosophy, from sociology to the natural sciences.
Drawings, textiles, photographs, installations, performances, participatory art are supports through which natural resources are subject to a reflection on their use and value. Nkanga thus poetically bears witness to environmental issues and the life-styles that come from them. In one of her recent creations, In Pursuit of Bling, 2014, composed of different elements, she traces the links between the desire, past and present, for raw materials and the commodification of nature.
Cracks Around The Corner, Otobong Nkanga’s first exhibition at the In Situ gallery, presents different thought and gesture processes and experimentation with different materials through new works composed of drawings, textile pieces, a sound installation and a wall painting created in the gallery’s space.
