Solid Maneuvers is a series of recent sculptures by Nkanga that develop further on her research into the exploitation of the natural landscape from the extraction of minerals. Their sculptural form refers to the topography of mined landscapes.
Nkanga reflects on humanity's drive to develop tools, culminating in the heavy machinery that radically degrades the landscape along with our connection to it.
The sculptures also reflect the layering found in architecture, each layer mirroring the levels of buildings typically made from materials that have been transformed unrecognisably to maximise their shine and brillance.
