"Bird House":

Nature is a theme many artists have used to serve as a footnote or an add-on to the core of what they do. It is a subject that has a ?life of its own? that is malleable, familiar and thought of as exotic.

On occasion Andrea Blum uses ?living things ? in her work as a metaphoric device to mirror social behavior. These situational tableaux become social studies in comparisons, species to species, and us to them. The Birdhouse is a cage-like pavilion stocked with a variety of birds in a manufactured landscape. The architecture changes the observer to the observed and the liberated to the contained, dependent on being inside or outside the pavilion structure.

The Birdhouse (2008-2012) is made of heat painted steel and engineered  for outdoor use. The roof is all weather corrugated plastic ; the floor treated plywood . The overall dimensions are variable , the pictured version is 6 m x 11m x 12m.
