The Circle of Confusion is an installation featuring a picture of Beirut cut into three thousand pieces, which visitors are invited to take away. From behind the large, increasingly fragmented picture there slowly emerges a mirror that steadily blends the image of the city with the reflection of the gallery and gallery goers. On the back of each piece is written 'Beirut does not exist'. Collective amnesia places the image in crisis. Reality vanishes, escapes the gaze, becomes latent : there is a play of mirrors and vestiges, obscuring the ghosts of a so-called civil war which has ended in appearence only. The goal of Hadjithomas and Joreige, however, is not to fill the gaps, but to reveal them - to include the beholder in the structure of absence.
